Vatousa is one of the five villages of Lesvos that has been characterized as a traditional village. Its history starts in the 10th century and probably takes it’s name from the word meaning area rich in berries.

The stone-paved streets and walls and the impressive stone houses with ceramic-tiled roofs is the fundamental characteristic that someone can remain. The people of Vatousa are famous for their hospitality. They are simple people that have worked hardly to survive under difficult circumstances.

For tourists, Vatousa is the pleasure of their holidays as buses with tourists stop at Xania (centre of Vatousa) in order to visit the traditional villages and the sightseeing.

The Gogos museum and its architectural plan has a big library of rare books with the history of Lesvos. Furthermore, the spectacular  architecture of the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is one of the oldest churches (1850) of the island. Its unique iconostasis of carved wood contains examples of post-Byzantine iconography.

Of particular interest within the village is also  the Church of Archangels, dates from 1832 and is a three-aisled basilica. Its yard is the cemetery of the village with ancient vaulted tombs.

The upper part of the village has traditional café where you can seat for a coffee, smell the fresh bread of the traditional bakery and breathe the fresh air.
